Biofuels Production and Processing Technology

چکیده

The negative global warming impact and environmental pollution due to fossil fuels mean that the main challenge of modern society is finding alternatives conventional fuels. In this scenario, biofuels derived from renewable biomass represent most promising energy sources. Depending on used by fermentation technologies, it possible obtain first-generation produced food crops, second-generation non-food feedstock, mainly starting lignocellulosic biomasses, third-generation biofuels, represented algae or waste biomass. Although appear be closest alternative fuels, necessary for them in competitive quantities costs, requiring both improvements production technologies diversification feedstock. This Special Issue focused technological innovations, which include but are not limited utilization different feedstock; pretreatments; strategies, such as simultaneous saccharification (SSF) separate hydrolysis (SHF); applied microorganisms monoculture co-culture; setups biofuel processes.

Biofuels versus food production: Does biofuels production increase food prices?

Rapidly growing fossil energy consumption in the transport sector in the last two centuries caused problems such as increasing greenhouse gas emissions, growing energy dependency and supply insecurity. One approach to solve these problems could be to increase the use of biofuels. Preferred feedstocks for current 1st generation biofuels production are corn, wheat, sugarcane, soybean, rapeseed an...

Biofuels from microalgae—A review of technologies for production, processing, and extractions of biofuels and co-products

Sustainability is a key principle in natural resource management, and it involves operational efficiency, minimisation of environmental impact and socio-economic considerations; all of which are interdependent. It has become increasingly obvious that continued reliance on fossil fuel energy resources is unsustainable, owing to both depleting world reserves and the green house gas emissions asso...

Maturation of biomass-to-biofuels conversion technology pathways for rapid expansion of biofuels production: a system dynamics perspective

The Biomass Scenario Model (BSM) is a system-dynamics simulation model intended to explore the potential for rapid expansion of the biofuels industry. The model is not predictive — it uses scenario assumptions based on various types of data to simulate industry development, emphasizing how incentives and technological learning-by-doing might accelerate industry growth. The BSM simulates major s...
